Now, let’s we learn more about his life. His spirit to learn Islam is something that we should follow. Hopefully this article inspire us to dig deeper about Islam with more spirit.

Real Name

His name after converted to Islam is Abdurrahman bin Shakhr ad Dausi. Other source said his name is Abdullah. So, it is may both of name are true. However, the most rajih was Abdurrahman.

Before converted to Islam, his name was Abdu Syams. However, there are some etiquette about name in Islam. Someone can not have name such as “Abdul Fulan” that has meaning “Slave of Fulan”. It is prohibited to give the name that has meaning worship of anything other than Allah. People who have name like that must change their name. Abdullah or Abdurrahman are allowed because the names show worship of Allah.

Childhood

He came from Daus in Yaman. When he was a child, he was charged for pasturing. In the meantime, he played with a cat. Because of it, he got his nickname. Abu Hurairah means “Father of the Kitten”.

How Abu Hurairah Became Muslim

Among the shirk and jahiliyyah, the influence of Islam in Mecca came to Ath Thufail bin Amr Ad Dausi. He visited Mecca from Daus. After that, he converted to Islam and returned to Daus. He invited people of Daus to convert to Islam.

According to a source, at Daus, Thufail influenced the people to convert to Islam, so his father converted to Islam. However, his mother refused. Then, Abu Hurairah accepted the converting invitation alone.

The Hijrah

Abdurrahman bin Shakhr migrated to Madeenah in the period the battle of Khaibar. He came in years 7 H. Later, he accompanied the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, so he could get knowledge from the Messenger.

The Patience

For hijrah, he lost the wealth he owned in Yaman. However, the Muslim at that time had place for people who want to learn. They could stay in the mosque.

People who stayed al-Masjid an-Nabawi that time was called Ahlu Suffah. He had high spirit. He rarely missed listen to the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.

Ahlu Suffah got food when the Messenger got food. And, they didn’t eat when the Messenger didn’t eat. So, the hunger of Ahlus Suffah mean the hunger of the Messenger Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.

As Hadith Narrator

Abdurrahman bin Shakhr was known as shahabat who narrated hadith the most. Aproximetely, 5000 hadiths had been narrated by him. Hopefully, his passion for learning give us some encouragement nowaday.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu ‘anhu divided his night by 3. He used the times for reciting Qur’an, for sleeping, and for reviewing the hadith he memorized.

Fidelity

Ibnu Hazm said there were 13 shahaabats that their fatwas were narrated. He placed Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu ‘anhu in forth place. The others were:

  • Ummu Salamah,
  • Anas,
  • Al Khudri,
  • Utsman,
  • Abdullah bin Amru,
  • Ibnu Az Zubair,
  • Abu Musa,
  • Sa’ad,
  • Salman,
  • Jabir,
  • Mu’adz,
  • Abu Bakar.

Ibnu Hazm said that they are only 13, that was possible their fatwas collected in small juz. Then, he added 7 others. Nevertheless, Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu ‘anhu was so worried and shy for giving fatwa. That was because the character and behavior of mukminin is tatsabut for giving fatwa.

Devotion to His Mother

Before, his mother was mushrik. He still persuaded her to convert to Islam. One day, his mother said something bad about the Messenger Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. He told that to the Messenger while crying. Then, he asked The Messenger to pray for his mother.

After the Messenger pray for his mother, he returned home to invite his mother again and tell that she was prayed by the Messenger. However, when he arrived home, the door was opened (another source said that the door was locked). He heard the sound of water. His mother told him to stay still, not allowed his son to enter.

His mother was perform body ablution. Then, she put her cloth on and wore hijab, and said

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ الله، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ

His mother decalared shahadat and became a muslimah. He came back to the Messenger for giving this news while crying in happiness.

End of life

He was given long live. He died almost at 80 years old. That means there was approximately 50 years between his and the the Prophet Muhammad’s death.

May Allah give His mercy to him. May Allah give us spirit to learn about Islam, always.
